Measuring the size of the apples
Thomas Bernhart started out by leasing the Pulthuab farm, which has holdings spread out between the villages of Ciardes and Castelbello. More recently he was able to buy it. He prepared himself well for his dream of becoming his own boss. He went to the South Tyrol technical college for fruit production, viticulture and horticulture in Laimburg and majored in nature-oriented production methods. Five years ago he converted the Pulthuab farm to organics and grows Golden Delicious, Braeburn, Gala and Red Delicious for sale. He also makes wine and grows potatoes for his family because "you know what you've got if you planted it yourself." He completely relies on his home's natural environment. On the one hand his soils are light, free-draining, and have long-lasting fertility thanks to organic farming. On the other, the Val Venosta climate gives him unusually warm days full of sunshine combined with cold mountain nights. The harvest is always the high point of the year for him: "That's when I can hold the fruits of my labour in my own hands, and biting into the first ripe Gala is my most enjoyable reward."
The tasty gala appears every summer in its reddish yellow shell and the new apple season begins.
from September to March
smooth shell, spherical shape, slightly conical, pale yellow base colour with bright red and striped cover
crispy and juicy with firm pulp
refreshing, sweet with little acidity
The image of the Red Delicious is difficult to resist. Seeing red can be really nice. And the red flavour is even more beautiful!
from October to May
dark red colour, conical shape, oblong
juicy with very white pulp
sweet, very aromatic with relatively slight acidity
The classic delicious
Golden Delicious is our main variety and, therefore, the queen of Val Venosta apples. That the most popular apple has a real quality, can be seen in its lovely red cheek. By the way, this is typical of fruits on a hillside.
from October to November
greenish yellow to golden yellow
juicy with very fine and soft pulp
sweet with delicate acidity
The juicy all-terrain
For a small snack between meals or used in many ways in the kitchen and bakery: The Braeburn is a true all-terrain. Be patient with it, as it develops its full aroma only after several storage months.
from October to May
Roll shaped with a smooth and shiny surface, golden yellow base, scarlet to dark red with stripes
very juicy with firm bite and firm pulp
pleasant proportion of sugar and acid, very refreshing
True friends share everything.
