Martin Tappeiner’s Pröfinghof farm is situated to the west of the village of Parcines. His great-grandfather purchased it around 1900. It was inherited to Martin who runs it together with his wife. Their son also gives them a hand occasionally and in very work-intensive periods, all the family members and relatives help.
Martin had considered running his farm organically for many years before he finally took the decision in 2014 – to avoid backing down he took his old motorbike and straight went to the „Bioland“ association where he signed all formalities and applied for the certification. „Even though organic agriculture means more work, it also gives you a lot. I’m more than happy with my decision,“ says Martin. Since his conversion to organic production Martin has occupied himself intensively with biodiversity and the promotion of useful insects. He thus created different places of retreat and nesting places for many animal and insect species in his apple orchards.
Martin has attended numerous courses so far and was especially impressed by his training as a soil practitioner: „I then became aware of how incredibly valuable knowledge about your soil can be. A fertile soil is the basis for every kind of agriculture.“He mainly grows apple trees of different varieties and some fresh fruit in his garden. While Martin mainly dedicates himself to the cultivation of his fruit trees, his wife lovingly cares about the old farm, lays out flowerbeds and runs a small farm shop where she offers own fruit as well as homemade dried fruit, apple jelly and apple juice. And quite a few hikers on their way through the apple orchards pass by and stop.
The elegant precocity
The tasty gala appears every summer in its reddish yellow shell and the new apple season begins.
September - March
smooth shell, spherical shape, slightly conical, pale yellow base colour with bright red and striped cover
crispy and juicy with firm pulp
refreshing, sweet with little acidity
The image of the Red Delicious is difficult to resist. Seeing red can be really nice. And the red flavour is even more beautiful!
October - May
dark red colour, conical shape, oblong
juicy with very white pulp
sweet, very aromatic with relatively slight acidity
The classic delicious
Golden Delicious is our main variety and, therefore, the queen of Val Venosta apples. That the most popular apple has a real quality, can be seen in its lovely red cheek. By the way, this is typical of fruits on a hillside.
