Gala
Origin: Royal Gala was selected in New Zealand in 1960 as the result of a cross between Kidd’s Orange and Golden Delicious.
Fruit: The apple is small to medium-sized with a smooth skin and a spherical, slightly conical shape. The bottom of the apple is bright yellow in colour while the top is bright red with a striped tinge.
Taste: The fruit is crunchy and juicy with a sweet aroma, and contains a low level of acid.
Ripening: Mid-August.
Marketing season: Beginning of September to end of March.
Recommendation: The apple is ideally suited for immediate fresh consumption as it may lose its typical taste if stored for long periods.
