Blueberries
Origin: Blueberries are cultivated on the northern hemisphere from the Arctic to the Mediterranean countries.
Fruit: Blueberries grow on robust bushes of up to 2 m. Their berries are larger than those of the wild varieties. The skin of the berries is blue-black, whereas the pulp is bright and reddish.
Taste: The taste of blueberries is sweet-acidulous combined with a fine wood flavour.
Maturity: from June to September.
Recommendations: Unwashed fruits can be stored at low temperatures in the fridge for a few days.
Wash with cold water and drain before preparation. Blueberries can be eaten raw or used for fruits salads, ice-cream, puddings, pancakes and cold sweet soups. Sugared blueberries are delicious and refreshing with milk, whipped cream, curd or yogurt. As the juice of blueberries jells easily, they are perfect for the preparation of jams and jellies.
