Strawberries
Origin: Our beautiful and large strawberry is the result of accidental crosses of different American wild varieties more than 200 years ago. Today, strawberries can be cultivated in nearly all countries of the world thanks to bred varieties that are ideal for all climate zones.
Fruit: The strawberry is the „queen“ of berries; our local wood strawberry has an unequalled taste. From a botanical point of view the strawberry plant is an herbaceous perennial. It is known as an accessory fruit as the fleshy part is not derived from the plant’s ovaries but from the peg at the bottom of the bowl-shaped hypanthium. The form and size of strawberries depend on the variety. The colour ranges from bright red to dark red; crispness and juiciness vary, too.
Taste: Strawberries are considered to be very sweet and juicy fruits.
Maturity: mainly from the beginning of June to the beginning of August.
Recommendations: Strawberries should be consumed as soon as possible as they are easily perishable.
Strawberries are above all fruits for fresh consumption with or without sugar, with whipped cream, milk, ice-cream, for fruit cakes, fruit salads, junket, milkshakes and punch. The strawberry is the most important fruit for both homemade jam and industrial jam production.
