Delicious and beautiful: the 10 virtues of an apple

The Amazing superfood powers of apples

by Marzia Nicolini

The popular saying "An apple a day keeps the doctor away" contains many truths: This fruit, which has been eaten and appreciated for centuries and originally comes from Central Asia, is definitely a superfood. What do we mean by this? It’s easy: apples are good for your health. We asked nutritionist Clelia Iacoviello to explain us the 10 virtues of apples: never again without.

1 Apples help during a diet
Apples are low-calorie fruits as 100 grams of apples only have about 52 kcal. You can thus have an apple as a morning or afternoon snack without gaining weight.

2 Precious nutrients
Apples are rich in fiber, vitamins, minerals and antioxidants. Furthermore, 84-88% of an apple consists of water protecting the body from drying out.

3 Apples encourage peristalsis
Apples have a probiotic effect as they are rich in pectin. Pectin is a soluble fiber that positively influences the gut. If you suffer from constipation, we recommend you to prepare applesauce. Add a little bit of cinnamon and cloves and it is even more delicious.

4 Healthy peel
Wash apples under running water and then eat them with the peel. This part of the fruit that many people simply put away is rich in quercetin, anthocyanin and pectin with an antioxidant effect. It also helps you if you suffer from constipation.

5 Apples protect the mucous membranes
Thanks to the high content of vitamin C and B apples protect your oral and intestinal mucous membranes.
6 Good source of energy
Due to the high levels of vitamin B apples are ideal if you suffer from tiredness. We thus recommend them in times of stress and fatigue and during seasonal changes.

7 For healthy and strong teeth
Have you ever noticed that many advertisements for toothpastes and mouthwashes show apples? Apples efficiently protect and strengthen teeth thanks to fluorine.

8 Natural sweetener
Apple juice, which is used a lot in Tyrol and Austria, is an excellent sweetener: Get into the habit of using it as a substitute for sugar when preparing healthy desserts, sweet dishes and cakes.

9 Apples help to keep your blood glucose levels under control
Apples have a low glycaemic index. According to a recent study published in a scientific magazine called "Food and Function" the consumption of apples is associated with a reduced risk of type 2 diabetes.

10 Apples alleviate asthma
When consumed regularly, apples positively influence the symptoms of asthma, which was proved by an American study published in the "Chest" magazine.
