Sana 2019 - New packhouse for Bio Val Venosta

At Sana in Bologna, Gerhard Eberhöfer presents the news regarding the processing of organic apples in Val Venosta

05.09.2019

“SANA is an important trade fair for Bio Val Venosta as one of the main producers of organic apples in both Italy and Europe,” explains Gerhard Eberhöfer, sales manager Bio Val Venosta, “because it is the first fair of the new season where we can inform our clients in advance about the latest news, and this year particularly about a new era for the processing of organic apples in Val Venosta that started on 1 September 2019.”

“This is a fundamental strategic and logistical change for organic apples in Val Venosta,” says Eberhöfer. “The new packhouse at the JUVAL cooperative in Castelbello is for VIP’s entire organic production that has been in Laces so far. This year, we register a 20% increase compared to last year for our organic production thanks to an increase in organic cultivation areas. The yield per hectare more or less corresponds to the one of last year with medium-small fruit size. Quality and coloring are excellent this year! The first organic Gala apples have already left our cold storage cells and are getting very positive feedback from our clients, which makes us expect a good start of the season.”
Organic is strongly on the rise: We assume that we will have some 1,000 hectares of organic production areas and 50,000 tons of organic apples until 2021. “These numbers speak for themselves,” continues Eberhöfer, “and require an own cooperative for organic products only. This step goes in the direction of maximum professionalization of our organization for the planning and processing of our organic products with the newest technologies: the new organic high-rack storage at Juval offers considerable advantages in terms of fast response to market requirements and quality of service for the client.”

Here are some important technical data that we would like to underline:

  • Sorting capacity: 18 tons/hour
  • Packing capacity: 28 tons/ hour
  • High-rack storage: storing capacity 18,000 bins.

“These new investments and the consequent reorganization of our processes allow us to reach a series of VIP’s strategic objectives from this season. These include:

  • Qualitative improvement for the management of apples thanks to the high-rack storage (FIFO, “First In, First Out”) at a constant temperature that, among others, guarantees an overall view of available certifications (Bioland, Demeter, etc.);
  • Product safety and guaranteed availability for 12 months;
  • Better processing/packing of apples thanks to modern lines;
  • Increased processing capacity and flexibility;
  • Possibility to use innovative packaging (100% cardboard foodtainer, etc.);
  • Better service and fast reaction to market developments

“These decisions are born from the wish to guarantee the best possible product to clients and consumers,” concludes Eberhöfer. “They go hand in hand with our social responsibility for the producers of our valley whom we want to offer a sustainable future for themselves and for their children.”
