“According to the first forecasts we expected a harvest similar to last year’s,” says Fabio Zanesco, sales manager of VIP. “VIP’s actual harvest, however, amounts to 350,000 tons with an increase of about 5% in first quality apples compared to the previous year. This slight increase is the result of the excellent growth of Golden and Pinova apples during the last weeks before the harvest, especially in Upper Val Venosta, with perfect sizes that allow us to regularly follow our destocking plan. As far as red and bicolored varieties such as Gala, Red Delicious and Kanzi® are concerned, the smaller fruit sizes due to the weather conditions in spring 2019 resulted in a lower production. Ambrosia™, however, presents a perfect size, which allows us to keep stocks in balance and to best serve all our markets. Other club varieties will be progressively sold from these weeks.”
“For both conventional and organic apples, the sales season is in full swing for the main varieties,” continues Zanesco. “The market is quite dynamic and sales have been positive until now in terms of quantities. The price level is good for the first phase of the season with market dynamics that are completely different from 2018, which was the worst season of the last decade for our producers. We currently have an excess of small fruit sizes for some varieties but I am convinced that the balanced total quantities allow us to find a regular sales rhythm for them as well and to get at least satisfying prices for an adequate remuneration for our producers.
Quality and color are very good, which makes us optimistic for the next months. We specified the details of our planning during the last days,” concludes Zanesco, “and we are progressively increasing the processing capacity in our cooperatives to be able to handle the peaks expected for the near future.”
“As far as our organic apples are concerned,” explains Gerhard Eberhöfer, sales manager of Bio Val Venosta, ”the dynamics at the beginning of the season were positive and perfectly in harmony with the 20% increase in our organic production due to new orchards that have just been added after the three-year conversion period. We can thus guarantee our clients the availability of organic apples all year long, which constitutes a fundamental part of our strategic plan.
Our new packhouse for organic apples at the Juval cooperative is fully active and the quantities available are increasing. So we can look with confidence towards the market developments of the next months.”
