Organic producer Sepp, as he is called by everyone, is the third generation of his family to run theLahnhoffarm in central Silandro. His father had alreadydedicated himself to growing apples in the orchards aroundVal Venosta’s administrative center „and I have always wanted to work in my father’s farm,“ says Seppwhose real name is Josef Frischmann. This is why he went to the famous Laimburg technical college for fruit production, viticulture and horticulture in South Tyrol and then took over the farm. He decided to grow apples according to organic guidelinesmore than 15 years ago „because I no longer wanted to use any chemical or synthetic pesticides, which I think is not a good thing.“ Today organic producer Sepp is convinced „that organic production is the right way.“ It is important to him to produce a healthy and natural product and to farm sustainably „so that my successors can still work in my orchards“. He can rely on the help of his daughters who support him during very busy periods. And when it is time to harvest his apple varieties Golden Delicious, Pinova, Idaredand Red Delicious, he also employs seasonal workers. Sepp is convinced that „a goodorganization of workis important to guaranteeprofessionalism and quality.“ In winter, however, he enjoys the tranquility around him: He cuts the apple trees and feels at ease when working in the nature. And in the evening, when the work is done, he likes biting into one of his crunchy Pinova apples „because they are the best.“

Golden Delicious is our main variety and, therefore, the queen of Val Venosta apples. That the most popular apple has a real quality, can be seen in its lovely red cheek. By the way, this is typical of fruits on a hillside.
