My story
After several decades of integrated farming, we decided to convert our farm to organic farming. By "we," I mean my father, my wife Astrid, and myself. Since 2015, we have been producing only organic apples on our farm: Royal Gala, Elstar, Golden Delicious, Pinova, Red Delicious, Braeburn, Fuji, Granny Smith, and the new variety Bonita.
In doing so, I have preferred resistant varieties, those that are less sensitive to diseases. One of my favorites is the Gala variety. Every year, I can almost feel the excitement as the harvest approaches. It’s quite nice that I can be the first to pick my favorite variety, as it ripens in August. My impatience thus ends relatively early, and afterwards, together with many harvest helpers, I take care of the other crisp fruits. We enjoy them together with our holiday guests.
Our Neuwirtshof farm in Rabland near Merano is perhaps so popular with guests because of this: We let them taste "our" nature, whether it's crisp sweet apples, fresh apple juice, dried fruits, or vegetables. They see how we produce and also understand the great challenges of organic farming and its gentle, nature-friendly approach. The closer to nature, the tastier. We all get to taste and benefit from it.
