Organic Producer - Niedermairhof
„Music is in the air and a very particular smell of apples as well“
I tie the young trees to the framework.
My son and me are planting apple trees.
My family and me live in Cirlano at the Niedermairhof farm.
Regular orchard inspections are part of daily work.
Bees and other insects use the flower strips as a source of food.
When my grandfather took over the „Beim Niedermoar“ farm in the post-war period, there weren’t any apartments. Today we offer farm holidays and have three apartments made of Swiss pine, spruce and larch, which constitute our second mainstay and perfectly supplement our work as apple producers. When I talk about us, then I mean my wife Rosmarie, my son Martin and me. We are absolutely convinced of organic production because we see it as a valorization of our farm.
Agriculture bears risks, of course. One example is the frost in 2012 that affected the whole harvest of our orchards in Cirlano. Unfortunately, we weren't covered by insurance back then. This is why we decided to offer farm holidays as well. We accommodate our guests from March to October in our apartments and thus give them the opportunity to experience important moments in a farmer’s year such as blossom, picking or harvest. Especially in spring, when the vegetation already revives in the valley floor, roes sometimes leave the mountains and come to the valley to nibble in our orchards. They feel the pleasant sound of nature that awakens earlier in the warm village of Cirlano than in the mountains. And there’s no point blowing my beloved alphorn to scare them away. I’m an enthusiastic musician and play in the „Hubertus Bläser“ band from Naturno.
We all are passionate hunters in my family and the few tones that come out of the alphorn are some kind of inner „soundtrack“ or background music while hunting. The sound of our apple varieties such as Pinova, Bonita or Natyra is per se very musical. Music and a good mood are very important for me. Nature is inspired by melodies and this motivates us to cultivate our 6 hectares of production areas with vigor and joy. In the end, it’s not what you say but how you say it. The tone reveals the spirit behind…and ours is organic. There’s no doubt about that.
