My story
Why did you choose organic farming?
There are many reasons to choose organic farming – both ideological and practical. On the one hand, we wanted to set an example and show that it’s possible to produce responsibly and still be economically sustainable. As a father and grandfather, I take this role seriously. It’s important to me that the younger generation understands the value of nature and organic farming.
That’s also why I wish that schools, kindergartens and hospitals would use more organic products – it really ought to be mandatory.
Especially in politically ruthless times, we should not abandon ecological thinking. Instead, we must secure the future of organic farming. In South Tyrol, we’ve reached a high level in sustainable apple cultivation and are considered a model in the fruit-growing sector.
What ecological practices do you apply in your apple orchards?
We implement many small steps – actions that every farm can take to contribute to a larger system. We use ecological plant protection measures in a timely and targeted way to protect the apples.
By planting hedges and creating habitats for reptiles and insects, we’ve brought biodiversity into our orchards.
On our 1.5-hectare plot, we grow several varieties such as Kanzi®, Natyra® and Gala – partly to serve niche markets, but also to ensure diversity and resilience. These varieties bloom at different times, which extends the period in which bees can produce honey.
You work professionally as a veterinarian. How do you see biodiversity from that perspective?
Biodiversity is a key resource for maintaining the balance of nature. The growing challenges nature faces – especially due to climate change – can only be met through biodiversity. The diversity of plant and animal life will be essential to human survival.
